Japanese rice fish detect ultraviolet rays from sunlight and turn their bodies black, a team of researchers has found.

The findings were published recently in the journal Science.

Recent research had found that some animals, including fish, can detect light without using their eyes. However, scientists did not know why this happens.

Some Japanese rice fish are almost translucent.

The team found that cells in the pituitary gland of the fish detect UV rays. They send a signal to pigment cells on the fish’s body. The fish’s body then turns black for protection.

The team suspects that animals with almost translucent bodies may have yet more ways to detect light directly.

The team includes University of Tokyo associate professor Shinji Kanda and Okayama University assistant professor Keita Sato.

メダカは日光からの紫外線を感知し、体を黒く変化させることを研究チームが発見した。

この発見は、『サイエンス』誌に最近発表されたものだ。

最近の研究で、魚をはじめとする一部の生物は、目を使わずに光を感知できることは分かっていた。しかし、科学者たちはこのことがなぜ起こるのかは分かっていなかった。

一部のメダカは半透明に近い。

研究チームは、メダカの脳下垂体が紫外線を感知していることを突き止めた。脳下垂体は、メダカの体の表面にある色素細胞に信号を送る。すると、メダカの体は防御のために黒く変化するのだ。

研究チームは、半透明に近い生物が光を直接感知する方法がさらに多くあるかもしれないと考えている。

研究チームには、東京大学の神田真司准教授、岡山大学の佐藤恵太助教などが参加している。
